Description

Nelson Gay, an elegant six bedroom coral stone Palladian mansion, is located on the West Coast of Barbados in a lush tropical beachfront estate of nearly two acres. Nelson Gay’s garden opens straight onto a stunning half-mile beach. The clear, sheltered Caribbean Sea is roped off for safe swimming and is ideal for all water sports. There is also a coral reef for excellent snorkeling. Nelson Gay is just perfect for a totally relaxing and unforgettable holiday.

British architect Barbara Hill designed the elegant mansion in the 1960s, under commission by US Ambassador Robert M. Scotten as his private residence. Inspired by a novel about life in the Winward Islands, Hill moved to Barbados in 1958, where she was a founding member of the local Institute of Architects and an active member of the Barbados National Trust. Nelson Gay, designed in the West Indian Colonial style, is considered one of Hill’s best works, ranking among one of Barbados’ finest homes.

Most recently renovated under the direction of architect Brian Surfleet, Nelson Gay has maintained a timeless quality difficult to find in more recently built properties, expertly mixing classic Palladian architecture with modern amenities to create the ideal family holiday setting. The home provides elegant accommodation for a couple desiring generous space for entertaining, and is also spacious enough for a large group or family.

After approaching the house by a circular drive, the main entrance hall sets the tone for the home’s refined tropical elegance; it features a marble floor with a compass rose design, breezy latticework, tropical plants and impressive sculptures. The hall opens to the living room, featuring a 14’ ceiling with an intricate wrought iron chandelier and most impressively, an unobstructed view of the gardens, pool and Caribbean Sea just beyond.

Situated on one level, the house has a central living area flanked by two wings; the rooms are spacious, airy and decorated with a sense of relaxed elegance. The design palette of white with accents of green compliment the tropical environs as well as the vibrant art collection, which includes several antiques and notable works of art, including a stunning Erté mural and a fine collection of Haitian paintings.

The South Wing of the home includes the kitchen, laundry room and formal dining room, a masterpiece within itself. Lit by candlelight only, the dining room provides a dramatic, intimate setting for evening parties. Featuring a glass-topped table designed by renowned designer Oliver Messel, complimented by French antique chairs and a selection of five different place settings, including Wedgewood, Rosenthal and Mikasa, the dining room accommodates up to 12 guests.

There are five bedrooms in the main house, each decorated in a soothing palette of green and white, with high quality linens, chandelier lighting, billowing curtains and tiled flooring also designed by Messel. The bedrooms are each individually air-conditioned and feature plasma televisions, cable and DVD players for entertainment; some have a small fridge and mini bar for added convenience. These five bedrooms, combined with the one bedroom cottage, have seven bathrooms in total (including a ‘His and Hers’), as well as a guest cloakroom.

One bedroom is located in the South Wing; featuring his and hers en suite bathrooms with showers. The bedroom’s external doors fold back to reveal a charming private patio with sitting area and verdant foliage, ideal for a morning cup of tea or private relaxation.

The North Wing houses the other four bedrooms, two of which comprise an impressively spacious Master Suite connected by a large en suite bathroom with shower; there is a second en suite bathroom in the suite as well.

The Erté Mural Room features a queen-sized bed, en suite bathroom with bath/shower and access to a covered terrace opening on to the pool and gardens. The room has been aptly named due to the unique mermaid mural painted by the artist on the bedroom’s wall, where he stayed during his frequent visits to Nelson Gay. Born in St. Petersburg in 1892, Erté established himself in Paris as a fashion illustrator for Harper’s Bazaar magazine, for which he produced 250 covers over 22 years. Best remembered for the extravagant costumes and stage sets he designed for the Folles-Bergère, he is considered one of the foremost fashion and stage designers of the twentieth century.

The fourth and final bedroom in the North Wing, the Green Room, features two single beds (which can be combined as a large king), en suite bath with shower, pool terrace access as well as a private patio opening on to the gardens.

The North Wing also has a media room with a range of entertainment amenities, including a 55” flat screen television with surround sound, cable television and a library of over 400 DVD titles. There is also a day bed that can be used for additional single accommodation if necessary.

As impressive as the interior living space is, Nelson Gay’s outdoor space is the true gem of the property. Complimented with lush green foliage and tropical flowers, residents will surely spend much of their time on the 60 ft. wide terrace, enjoying the environs. Running adjacent to the central living room, the terrace provides three separate areas for lounging or dining poolside. The shaded lounge area has a light, airy and inviting appeal, with ceiling fans, white cushioned furniture, vibrant accessories and a clear view of the gardens and pool to keep an eye on the children or just to enjoy the surroundings. There are two dining areas; the first features a large table with seating for up to 20 people under a canopy with fans, and a smaller table located poolside in the center of the terrace enjoys full sun or moonlight. The terrace is complimented by beautiful flora and fauna, as well as lighting designed by Bruce Munro.

The focal point of the gardens is the stunning 50 ft. pool that extends from the terrace toward the sea at the far end of the lawn; finished with Italian green tiling with inlaid mosaics of turtles and tropical fish, its stunning beauty is further enhanced by dramatic underwater lighting, creating an ideal setting for poolside evening cocktails. The pool is bordered by a verdant lawn with inviting green cushioned loungers, where residents can enjoy both full sun and shade throughout the course of the day. The pool can be fenced for young children’s safety, as well as heated on request.

An octagonal ‘Chinese’ dining gazebo, designed by architect Larry Warren, is a charming addition to the garden; it seats up to 14 and has a wet bar and fridge for easy entertaining, providing an excellent setting for relaxing on the comfortable sofas or enjoying al fresco dining.

At the far end of the garden, there is direct access to the coral sand beach, with seating just before the private beach gate. There is a roped area for safe swimming and a nearby coral reef provides excellent snorkeling. Cobblers Cove Hotel is just a short walk up the beach, where guests of Nelson Gay can enjoy tennis, a gym and spa services for a small fee. Additional concierge services can be arranged through the house manager and West Coast Villas Sotheby’s International Realty, ensuring your stay is customized to your group’s interests.

In addition to the main house’s accommodation for up to 11 persons, Nelson Gay offers additional guest quarters can accommodate up to seven additional guests.  The media room within the main house holds a day bed which sleeps one, but roll away beds can be rented if need be for up to 2 persons. A self-contained guest cottage with private patio and en suite bathroom sleeps two additional guests. There are also a traditional Barbadian wooden Chattel House, charming cottage featuring porches, gingerbread trim and white shuttered windows. The cottage provides accommodation for two people and an en suite bathroom and a small kitchenette. Perfect for teens or young adult guests, the Chattel Houses can be used by special arrangement.

With such a range of accommodation, Nelson Gay is an ideal holiday retreat for groups of friends as well as families with children of all ages. Several measures have been taken to ensure Nelson Gay provides a stress-free, safe environment for families with small children to enjoy their holiday. The pool can be fenced on request, and all outdoor and indoor furniture is covered in durable, washable and ‘childproof’ Sunbrella fabric. The beach is an excellent play area, and the sea is normally calm and safe for supervised swimming. A crib with mosquito netting is available for babies up to nine months, and additional equipment can be arranged through concierge services.

To ensure your holiday exceeds your expectations, Nelson Gay is staffed by an experienced, well-trained and friendly team including a butler, cook, housekeeper, maid / laundress, two gardeners and a night watchman. This core staff can be increased depending on season and number of guests. The staff will tend to your every need, including planning meals, shopping, cooking, serving, cleaning, laundry and everything else, ensuring you receive a stress-free five-star experience during your stay, while providing complete privacy. Thank you and the team so much for all your help with my Father’s 80th birthday celebrations last Friday at Nelson Gay. We had a fantastic holiday, and the surprise party was a fitting end to a great week. Bravo the magician, the band and the outstanding singer (Betty Griffith Payne) all lived up to our expectations. The delicious cake was a great success too. So please pass on our thanks to those who helped create a wonderful family memory.

Exceptional staff, beautiful beach location, old world charm. We visited Nelson Gay to celebrate my husband’s 40th birthday and invited four other families to join us--11 adults, 7 kids (ages 6-11). There are not many beachfront villas that are large enough to accommodate a group of 18 in Barbados---and most will not accept this many children under 12. Nelson Gay was perfect for this group. It is a three minute walk on the beach to Speightstown and Cobblers Cove is right next door. Besides two excursions, Sandy Lane golf, and one dinner reservation, we stayed at the villa the entire time. Its prime beachfront location, huge pool, and large open grounds make it easy to please a variety of ages and activity levels. The villa has plenty of kids/adult snorkeling equipment, boogie boards, huge inflatable raft, pool toys, soccer balls, etc. We also arranged for 4 paddleboards to be delivered for the week. The staff are exceptional at Nelson Gay. We enjoyed every meal and moment we spent there! We hope to return again next year!

Great, historic location with a very secluded feel. Excellent staff made it tough to find a reason to leave the property. Weather was perfect and walk on access to the beach was great. Nice pool and lush vegetation--even a daily visit from monkeys! All in all, a great vacation spot.

This is the third year running we have visited Nelson Gay for spring half term, and each year it spins it's magic on us. We love the laid back style, the friendly staff, and the great food. More than anything though, the garden (which would put most botanical gardens to shame) and the beach and the pool just give us the perfect playground for the extended family, which for that week includes the wild monkeys and the mongoose. Roll on next year!

We are a group of 6 couples who first rented out Nelson Gay for a long weekend in November 2011. The setting of the villa is spectacular. It is on a calm beach and has a spectacular pool. Watching Sunset every night with cocktails is heaven on earth. From the time we arrived until we left we felt that staff tended to our every need. From rum punch on arrival to elaborate meals, to laundry every day. The food was made fresh for each meal exceeded our expectations. We have now rented out this house for 3 consecutive years and we all look forward to reuniting with all the staff in Nov 2014.

From the moment we entered the stunning tranquillity of Nelson Gay, any apprehension we may have had about renting a villa from only photos and online comments were banished. The villa grounds are mature, lush, and so welcoming, the pool gorgeous, the beach quiet and relaxing. Sun and shade always available. The house is spectacular, rooms cool and relaxing - the bedroom air conditioners excellent, beds so comfy. We ate all meals outside, cannot say enough about the food -- breakfast prepared to order -- who knew French toast could be so good --lunches and dinners absolutely delicious (menu determined by guests and chef upon arrival, and easy to adjust as groceries are purchased daily (we ended up requesting flying fish a second time), food allergies/preferences no problem. Healthy, fresh--we did not gain weight! There was even coffee ready when the early risers were in need. We had one meal out, at a highly rated restaurant, ended up cancelling other reservations since the food we were treated to at NG was so much better! Afternoon cocktails so lovely -- and customized. The house manager introduced the staff as soon as we arrived, clearly describing responsibilities of each. Knowing we would have a staff of 7 was a bit daunting in theory (we have a staff of 0), but all were charming, friendly (as we found everyone we met in Barbados to be), efficient, hard working, thoughtful, and so comfortable to be with. Chris took us out to feed the 'resident' turtle most mornings--an amazing experience to be able to feed and touch such a majestic creature. The owner of the house called to speak with us while we were there, genuinely interested in our thoughts, He wanted to be sure we were having a wonderful time. Decadent relaxation-would return in a heartbeat!

- “I found the house, garden, pool, staff (+ Liz) just perfect. We like a house with character and representing the architecture of the island. The staff were lovely. You certainly have a great team. We have never experienced such luxury … water skiing, swimming with the turtles, snorkeling, etc. was arranged by Chris who seemed to know everyone in Speightstown! I must also compliment the two cooks who never produced an inferior meal and the desserts in particular were outstanding. I am sure we shall return in the near future - how could we resist So, many thanks for providing us with the most wonderful holiday which we will cherish for a long time.”

What a fantastic place! We were made to feel at home from the moment we walked in. Great people keeping the grounds and living quarters in an impeccable manner. Cooks who plan menus with the guests and then proceed to buy whatever is needed, including the wines and spirits. In short, we were treated royally; the greatest of courtesy was given always respectfully, politely, and good naturally. It is, was, an ideal Eden private beachfront Villa perfect for my large family get-together. It is for these reasons that I speak highly of Nelson Gay and will recommend it to anyone, and everyone, I meet. We, my family and I, will remember it and cherish it as one of the great experiences in our lives.

Since we are such a large group, usually numbering 16 to 20 , we have to find Villas that can accommodate that many guests. What separates the excellent from the not so good is the Staff, which can make or break even the nicest of facilities. Your Staff is one of the finest we have encountered and made for us one very terrific vacation. We of course would consider Nelson Gay for a repeat performance.

This was the second time that our family returned to Nelson Gay and, as before, it was paradise.A lush green lawn surrounds the pool and a beach is at the end of the garden: what more could you ask for? The best thing is probably the staff who manage to keep that fine balance between staying out of the way, allowing you some privacy, and being on hand whenever you need them. The villa dates back to the 50's, and has all the charme of those years. Rooms are very spacious, some decorated with authentic frescos by Erte. Gerden is very well kept and allows charming relax in the shadow of tropical trees. Swimming pool is tiny but perfect for the villa's guest. From the garden, there is a direct access to a gorgeous sand beach, very quiet and exclusive. Structure is clean and well organised. Staff kind and flexible to all requests. Every need was taken care of without ever having to ask. The property was peaceful and beautiful, front access to the ocean, and a pool on premises. Just returned from Barbados , we had a fantastic time . Billy and his team were great , really good with the kids and extremely accommodating on all fronts. We lived in Cape Town for 10 years and had a very similar set up on the side of the mountain overlooking the water, everyone felt like they were at home again!! We are thinking about returning to barbados in June or July and possibly spending 2-3 weeks as 5 days was simply not enough for us .

I wanted to touch base with you about our trip. Our vacation was great and I wanted to let you know about the house as I don’t think you know about this one. Nelson Gay was great and so was the staff. Everyone was attentive and friendly and made us feel very comfortable. The property and house are wonderful. The grounds were really, really nice and well kept, the pool was wonderful and the beach there was the best one we’ve had yet, broader than the others and usable even at high tide. And we really liked being up north closer to Speightstown -- access to a town (supermarket, restaurants) close by and still not too far from Holetown, and quiet. They had 2 chefs, and the food was excellent. We everything from fish to chicken, soups, salad, fresh made deserts, etc. All was delicious, and they were very accommodating to making multiple things at once as some folks tastes and preferences were different. Butler would walk a cooler to the table at the top of the beach every day so we had drinks there if we wanted them, towels were out every day, and they were really just overall very accommodating. All in all, Nelson Gay was a great spot and I would recommend it.
